The Hungaria Gala Ball is an annual event organized under the auspices of the Hungarian Veterans’ Association, Calgary Chapter. What started as a simple social dinner in 1956 has now evolved into an elaborate and elegant debutante evening. Today, it remains as one of the few Gala Balls in Canada, which feature debutantes and their escorts. It truly is an experience, which rekindles the romance, and traditional roles played by these gala events in previous centuries.

Guests are greeted with a champagne reception where everyone can relax and socialize with friends, family and the flawlessly dressed debutante couples as they mingle with guests. In the ballroom we are treated to a royal spectacle as we watch dancers perform the stately Palotás, the Court Dance. A specially planned five course dinner follows while an accomplished musician plays in the background.

The debutantes are spotlighted as they take a gracious curtsey in their shimmering white gowns and then swirl around on the dance floor to the timeless melody of an old-world waltz. After the Ball is formally declared open, we all dance the night away to the upbeat sound of a full orchestra.

It is the wish of the Hungarian Veterans’ Association to maintain, foster, and share this unique Hungarian tradition within the Canadian multicultural mosaic. Its uninterrupted presence in the City of Calgary, for over 50 years, attests to its wide appeal even in our modern and highly mobile society and culture. Every year we welcome representation from all three levels of government, police and fire services, the armed forces and the RCMP. It is very rewarding to know that over the years we have been able, with the commitment of sponsors and patrons, to provide our guests with the opportunity to experience and delight in these distinctive traditions.
